Asking The Right Questions

The way to avoid a mistake when selecting an apartment or purchasing a home is to ask questions.  Some questions are for the apartment management or real estate agent, other questions are best answered by your prospective neighbors.

Questions for the Apartment Management Or Real Estate agent (if applicable):

Apartment Questions:

  1. Are Children and pets allowed
  2. What is the apartment‘s policy concerning noise? 
  3. Is there a designated parking place with the apartment? If you are a household with more than one car you should ask them if extra parking places can be obtained, and if so, what is the cost? 
  4. What type of laundry facilities does the apartment have? 
  5. What, if any, utilities are included in the rent? 
  6. What security features do you have? Smoke detectors?

Questions for Apartment neighbors:

  1. How often do you hear noise from dogs, planes, or trains? 
  2. How responsive is the apartment management to repairing things? 
  3. Do they maintain things like smoke detectors and external lights to keep the complex safe? 
  4. If the laundry facilities not included in you apartment you may want to find if the complex have an inadequate supply of washers and dryers? 
  5. If the complex is gated, is the main entrance usually locked securely? 
  6. How do you find snow removal to be?
